We are seeking a Senior Research Associate/Research Associate in Business Innovation in Zero Emissions to join UK FIRES to explore the business innovation opportunities revealed by the UK’s zero emissions commitment assuming a future energy shortage. The position is for 12 months initially but could be extended and could be offered part-time. The post holder will be located in central Cambridge.
UK FIRES is a 5-year, multi-university, interdisciplinary EPSRC Programme Grant exploring all aspects of the UK’s future industrial strategy in the context of its zero emissions commitment. The Programme team, led by Professor Julian Allwood, wrote the Absolute Zero report, which is the first document anticipating the path to zero emissions framed by realistic energy restraint. Absolute Zero triggered a full debate in the House of Lords, and led to a request by the UK’s Catapult Networks for further work describing the business innovation opportunities revealed by the report.
In collaboration with our Industrial Consortium, UK FIRES is running a series of sectorial workshops revealing a wealth of untapped innovation opportunities. Armed with the workshop outputs, the post holder will seek to reveal where and how new business models can be used, with new configurations of existing technologies, to support a radical reduction in energy demand. The post holder will create outward facing reports to stimulate innovation in practice and gain wide exposure to the opportunities of a zero emissions future, to interact with a broad range of academic disciplines and companies, and to develop a portfolio of impact in business and policy.
Applicants must have already been awarded their PhD or possess equivalent research experience in a related area, including business and sustainability, innovation, applied economics or engineering management. They should also have significant experience of business interaction, good communication skills, an enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work and an ambition to drive the transition to zero emissions.
Appointment at the level of Senior Research Associate/Grade 9 is dependent on the applicant having additional years of significant postdoctoral experience in a relevant area of research, or equivalent experience in industry, with proven impact from authored publications.
